Wild camp 3.2km before Fern Burn Hut – Roses Hut : 19.9km
La météo est finalement toujours avec nous ! Alors qu’hier de gros nuages gris se faisaient menaçants, ils ont aujourd’hui complètement disparu ! C’est donc dans la bonne humeur qu’on quitte notre camp dans la forêt pour nous lancer à l’assaut des montagnes.
En une heure nous atteignons la première hut : Fern Burn Hut. C’est une bien jolie hut dans un vallon maintenant illuminé du soleil matinal. Elle marque aussi le début de la première montée du jour jusqu’à un premier col au-delà duquel se trouve la seconde hut du track – Highland Creek Hut – qu’on atteint vers 12:30.
On y reste finalement presque 1h30 car il commence à faire très chaud sous ce soleil de plomb et on a encore pas mal de dénivelé à gravir. C’est donc finalement vers 14 :00 qu’on s’attaque au dernier et plus intense tronçon du jour avec deux cols de 500m de dénivelé chacun à passer.
Il nous faut 1h30 pour parcourir les 3km jusqu’au premier col où on arrive complètement dégoulinant de sueur puis un peu moins d’une heure pour redescendre de l’autre côté jusqu’au premier endroit où nous pouvons enfin nous mettre un peu à l’abri du soleil. En effet, au fond de cette petite vallée se trouve un petit ruisseau et ainsi toute une végétation verdoyante qui pousse à ses côtés. On est bien heureux de pouvoir se rafraîchir avec cette eau bien froide.
30 minutes plus tard, c’est reparti pour la toute dernière et probablement la plus raide montée du jour. A nouveau près de 500m de montée en moins de 2km cette fois et comme toujours presque tout droit dans la montée. Avec la fatigue accumulée de la journée, nos mollets se mettent très vite à brûler. Mais avec force de persévérance et quelques pauses, on atteint enfin notre troisième col du jour vers 18 :00. On est complètement éclaté mais on est bien content de voir en contrebas notre destination finale pour aujourd’hui : Roses Hut.
Pendant la descente, on voit la hut rapidement passer à l’ombre de la montagne avec le soleil qui disparait à l’horizon. Sur place, nous retrouvons Gijs dans sa tente à l’abri des sandflies qui pullulent comme souvent et dans la hut bien pleine il y a Max et Kat. Kat fête d’ailleurs aujourd’hui ses 30ans !
Au final, on s’est tapé presque 1900m de dénivelé sur ces 20km de distance parcourus. Sans le savoir au départ, on vient de faire notre deuxième plus grosse journée du TA en matière de dénivelé et on l’a bien senti vers la fin. Surtout avec le soleil tapant constamment au-dessus de nos têtes…
The weather is finally still with us! While yesterday big gray clouds were threatening, today they have completely disappeared! It is therefore in a good mood that we leave our camp in the forest to take on the mountains.
In one hour we reach the first hut: Fern Burn Hut. It is a very pretty hut in a valley now illuminated by the morning sun. It also marks the start of the first big climb of the day to a first pass beyond which is the second hut of the track – Highland Creek Hut – which we reach at around 12:30 p.m.
We finally stay there for almost 1h30 because it is starting to get very hot under this blazing sun and we still have a lot of elevation to climb. It is therefore finally at around 2:00 p.m. that we tackle the last and most intense section of the day with two passes of 500m elevation each to pass.
It takes us 1h30 to cover the 3km to the first pass where we arrive completely dripping with sweat, then a little less than an hour to go down on the other side to the first place where we can finally get some fresh air and shelter from the sun. Indeed, at the bottom of this small valley is a small stream and green vegetation that grows alongside it. We are very happy to be able to refresh ourselves with this very cold water.
30 minutes later, it’s on again for the very last and probably the steepest climb of the day. Again almost 500m of elevation in less than 2km this time and as always almost straight uphill. With the accumulated fatigue of the day, our calves very quickly start to burn. But with perseverance and a few breaks, we finally reach our third pass of the day at around 6:00 p.m. We are completely knackered but we are very happy to see our final destination for today: Roses Hut.
During the descent, we see the hut quickly pass in the shadow of the mountain with the sun disappearing under the horizon. On site, we find Gijs in his tent sheltered from the sandflies which abound as often and in the very full hut there are Max and Kat. By the way, Kat celebrates her 30th birthday today!
In the end, we climbed almost 1900m of elevation over these 20km of distance covered. Without knowing it at the start, we have just had our second biggest day of the TA in terms of elevation and we felt it hard towards the end. Especially with the sun constantly beating on our heads…
