Monuriki Island (Cast Away film set)
Aujourd’hui, cap vers Monuriki Island ! Connue pour avoir été le lieu de tournage du film Cast Away (Seul au monde) avec Tom Hanks. Notre idée est de trouver un ancrage pas loin et d’aller la visiter le lendemain matin.
Mais c’était sans compter, à nouveau, sur la météo fijienne. En effet, déjà en arrivant à la tombée du jour, le vent souffle bien fort entre 20 et 25 nœuds. En soi, ce n’est pas tant problème sauf que les ancrages à disposition ne sont pas très rassurants car ils sont soit entourés de récifs, soit trop profonds pour nos 45m de chaîne (il y a >20m de fond et il faut environ 3x la profondeur de chaîne pour être sûr que l’ancre ne dérape pas trop). Oui, les îles sont très escarpées sous l’eau.
On tente quand même le coup près de la plage de Monuriki Island avec environ 18m de fond mais on est super exposé au vent et le bateau tire beaucoup sur l’ancre. A un tel point qu’après environ 3h (il est maintenant 21:00), on a déjà reculé de plus de 20m et on se rapproche dangereusement des récifs de l’île derrière nous.
Tout le monde sur le pont, on va tenter de se réancrer plus près de la plage. À la troisième tentative, l’ancre semble enfin mordre mais on garde un œil dessus… Et ça ne manque pas, dans les 10 minutes qui suivent on sent l’ancre trainer.
À 22:00, la décision est prise: tant pis pour l’île, on retourne vers Denarau car il n’y a littéralement aucun autre ancrage pour voilier à l’abri du vent dans les environs à part Musket Cove qui nécessite de passer au milieu de récifs et hors de question de faire ça de nuit.
Il s’ensuit une navigation de nuit de 5 heure en zigzagant en évitant au mieux les îles et récifs jusqu’à la plage de Lomolomo devant laquelle nous faisons enfin tomber l’ancre à 3:00 du matin dans 10 petits mètres d’eau bien à l’abri du vent. On peut enfin aller de coucher tranquille…
Today, we’re heading towards Monuriki Island! Known for being the filming location for the film Cast Away with Tom Hanks. Our idea is to find an anchorage not far away and go visit it the next morning.
But that was without taking into account, once again, the Fijian weather. Indeed, already upon arriving at dusk, the wind is blowing very strongly between 20 and 25 knots. In itself, this is not much of a problem except that the anchorages available are not very reassuring because they are either surrounded by reefs or too deep for our 45m of chain (there is >20m of depth and it takes around 3x the depth of the chain to be sure that the anchor does not slip too much). Yes, the islands are very steep underwater.
We still give it a try near the beach of Monuriki Island with around 18m of depth but we are very exposed to the wind and the boat pulls a lot on the anchor. So much so that after about 3 hours (it is now 9:00 p.m.), we have already moved back more than 20m and we are getting dangerously close to the reefs of the other island behind us.
All hands on deck! We’re going to try to re-anchor closer to the beach. On the third attempt, the anchor finally seems to bite but we keep an eye on it… And it was for the best as in the 10 minutes that follow we feel the anchor dragging massively.
At 10:00 p.m., the decision is made: screw the island, we return to Denarau because there is literally no other anchorage for sailboats sheltered from the wind in the surrounding area apart from Musket Cove which requires passing in the middle of reefs and out of the question to do this at night.
What follows is a 5-hour nighttime navigation zigzagging between islands and reefs as best we can until we reach Lomolomo beach, in front of which we finally drop anchor at 3:00 a.m. in 10 short meters of water and well sheltered from the wind. We can finally go to bed peacefully…
