Freshwater Hut – Oban : 23.1km
Départ tôt vers 7:40 ce matin car on a aujourd’hui notre plus longue journée de marche sur cette île qui nous attend ! Plus de 23km de forêt encore à parcourir. Mais heureusement, la dernière dizaine se fait sur la Rakiura Great Walk et donc sur un sentier en principe en excellent état.
On ne s’attarde pas trop en chemin aujourd’hui car nous sommes principalement en forêt et elle est similaire à ce qu’on a déjà vu au début de la semaine. On a quand même une belle bosse à gravir avant de redescendre sur la côte qu’on longe jusqu’à la fin.
On arrive donc enfin après 4 heures de marche sur à la North Arm Hut qui marque notre retour sur la Great Walk. À point nommé pour y prendre notre lunch. On y est rejoint un peu plus tard par nos amis belges. À l’heure de notre départ, nous devons malheureusement leur dire au revoir car ils vont faire un dernier détour avant de retourner à Oban pour leur ferry. On espère qu’on aura une occasion de les revoir un jour 🙂
En attendant, on arrive enfin à notre hostel après 3 heures de marche sur la Great Walk. Comme à.notre habitude, on s’empresse de lancer un lessive une fois à peine installés. En y repensant, je crois que c’est la plus grande durée sans lessive qu’on ait vécu de notre séjour avec 8 jours d’affilée 😅. Autant dire que c’était bien mérité.
À 17:30, affamés comme jamais, on file à un foodtruck – the Kai Kart – renommé pour ses fish’n’chips (notre lunch était léger car on avait que 7 jours de bouffe pour les 8 jours que ça nous a finalement pris 😅). Un pur régal et effectivement parmi les meilleurs qu’on ait mangés jusqu’à présent ! Une belle façon de finir cette superbe aventure 😄
Early departure at around 7:40 this morning because today we have our longest day of walking on this island waiting for us! More than 23km of forest still to be covered. But fortunately, the last ten Ks are done on the Rakiura Great Walk and therefore on a path in principle in excellent condition.
We don’t linger too long on the way today because we are mainly in the forest and it is similar to what we have already seen at the beginning of the week. We still have a nice bump to climb before descending on the coast that we follow until the end.
So we finally arrive after 4 hours of walking at the North Arm Hut which marks our return to the Great Walk. Perfect time to have our lunch there. We are joined there a little later by our Belgian friends. At the time of our departure, we unfortunately have to say goodbye to them because they will make a final detour of a couple of days before returning to Oban for their ferry. We hope we will have an opportunity to see them again one day 🙂
In the meantime, we finally arrive at our hostel after 3 hours of walking on the Great Walk. As usual, we hasten to start a laundry once barely installed. Thinking about it, I think it’s the longest time without laundry we’ve experienced during our stay in NZ with 8 days in a row without 😅. Suffice to say it was well deserved.
At 5:30 p.m., hungry as ever, we go to a food truck – the Kai Kart – renowned for its fish’n’chips (our lunch was light because we only had 7 days of food for the 8 days that it finally took us 😅). A pure delight and indeed among the best we have eaten so far! A great way to end this great adventure 😄
