Stodys Hut – Lake Hawea : 23.1km
Avec le repos qu’on a eu hier, on est bien frais et dispo ce matin et on quitte la hut à 7:40 sous un ciel d’un bleu azure.
On met 2 heures pour atteindre le seul sommet du jour, Breast Hill, pendant lesquelles on voit le soleil matinal progressivement colorer les montagnes aux alentours. Une fois au sommet, on retombe sur Max qui était parti bien avant nous.
De là, on peut enfin apercevoir Lake Hawea en contrebas et plus loin encore à l’horizon la petite ville de Wanaka ! On profite un moment du paysage avant de commencer la descente.
Et quelle descente ! Le sentier est très raide et d’abord sur le tranchant d’une arrête avant de descendre, étonnement, en zig zag plutôt qu’en ligne droite comme on en a l’habitude. Mais on va pas s’en plaindre. Surtout nos genoux 😁.
Une fois en bas vers midi, juste au moment où nous rejoignons la route qui longe la rive du lac, on retrouve Kat qui avait finalement dormi au sommet pour y voir le lever de soleil.
Le lac est tellement beau et d’une clarté surprenante qu’on s’arrête très vite à une table de camping pour y manger notre lunch mais pas avant d’avoir piqué une tête dans ledit lac. Avec ce soleil bien chaud, le frais du lac est un pur régal !
Finalement, après une heure on reprend la route avec comme objectif le Holiday Park du coin. Park qu’on atteint 2h30 plus tard après un petit stop milkshake dans le mini supermarché du coin 😋.
Une fois au camp, on plante la tente et on file replonger dans le lac pour profiter des derniers rayons de soleil qui est sur le point de passer derrière les montagnes.
Comme accompagnement avec le souper de ce soir qu’on prend à la roulotte du park, on a droit a un petit concert de musique accoustique par une fille seule avec sa guitare qui nous joue des reprises très sympa.
Pour ce soir, le ciel est tellement dégagé qu’on a décidé de ne pas mettre notre couche extérieure de tente pour tenter de profiter du ciel étoilé. Au final on fini quand même par sortir de la tente vers 23:00 pour aller voir le ciel depuis le bord du lac et, même avec la petit pollution lumineuse de la ville d’à côté, c’est merveilleux 🤩.
With the rest we had yesterday, we are fresh and ready this morning as we leave the hut at 7:40 am under an azure blue sky.
It takes us 2 hours to reach the only peak of the day, Breast Hill, during which we see the morning sun gradually color the surrounding mountains. Once at the top, we meet again with Max who had left long before us.
From there, we can finally see Lake Hawea below and even further on the horizon the small town of Wanaka! We admire the landscape for a while before starting the descent.
And what a descent! The trail is very steep and first on the edge of a ridge before descending, surprisingly, in a zig zag rather than a straight line as we are used to. But we won’t complain. Especially our knees 😁.
Once at the bottom at around noon, just as we rejoin the road that runs along the shore of the lake, we find Kat tells us she slept at the top to see the sunrise from there.
The lake is so beautiful and surprisingly clear that we stop very quickly at a picnic table to eat our lunch there, but not before having taken a dip in said lake. With this very hot sun, the freshness of the lake is a pure delight!
Finally, after an hour we hit the road again aiming for the local Holiday Park. Park that we reach 2h30 later after a little milkshake stop in the mini supermarket round the corner 😋.
Once at the camp, we pitch the tent and head back into the lake to take advantage of the last rays of the sun which is about to pass behind the mountains.
As an accompaniment to tonight’s supper that we take from a food truck in the park, we enjoy a little concert of acoustic music by a single girl with her guitar who plays very nice covers for us.
For tonight, the sky is so clear that we decid not to put the outer layer of our tent to try to enjoy the starry sky. In the end, we end up getting out of the tent at around 11:00 p.m. to go see the sky from the shore of the lake and, even with the little light pollution from the town next door, it’s wonderful 🤩.
