Downes Hut – Hiponga Camp : 24.1km (canoe)
Joyeux Noël ! Pour l’occasion on c’est grasse matinée jusqu’à 9:30. Heure à laquelle on commence notre brunch de Noël sous un soleil rayonnant. Et pour fêter ça on se fait aujourd’hui des pancakes ! Malheureusement pas avec ma recette habituelle mais avec un mix préfait dans lequel il suffit d’ajouter de l’eau. Quoi qu’il en soit, ça fait largement l’affaire 😋.
On a qu’une seule poêle avec nous donc on va chacun notre tour nous cuire un pancake pendant bien 2 heures. On partage aussi d’autres snacks avec les autres personnes présentes. On passe vraiment un super bon moment.
Mais malheureusement, il faut quand se mettre en route à un moment pour atteindre le prochain camp. On range donc tout notre bordel et on est sur l’eau vers 12:30. La journée est toujours radieuse et on avant tranquillement. Après un moment on se met quand même à ramer car un vent de face se lève ce qui ralenti significativement notre avancée. Ça ne nous empêche pas de nous mettre en radeau de temps en temps avec Kat, Max, Jamie et Roxann.
On atteint finalement Hiponga Camp vers 17:30. C’est notre dernier camp avant le retour à la civilisation 🙁. L’arrivée au camp en soi se mérite car une bonne petite pente raide monte depuis le ponton d’amarrage et il faut monter tous les barils…
Une heure plus tard, une fois la tente installée on commence à préparer notre souper de Noël. On tente encore une fois une variante du curry de pois chiches avec plus de légumes et sans les épinards qu’on a dû jeter 2j auparavant car ils de sont fait écraser pendant le voyage 😅. Gijs nous prépare aussi une casserole de vin chaud. L’odeur est très alléchante mais le goût est un peu à côté et très amer car on a pas de sucre. Qui ne tente rien n’a rien, je fais infuser un des marshmallows de Max dans le vin et étonnement ça rattrape un peu le truc ! Ça enlève une partie de l’amertume mais on arrive quand même pas à finir le pot… Mais c’était quand même une bonne tentative !
Pour le dessert, on partage quelques snacks et chocolats avec le groupe. D’ailleurs Kat nous fait goûter une sucrerie locale : des bonbons à l’arôme Pavlova. Et c’est… Vraiment pas très bon haha. Même Kat l’admet, elle est pas fan mais elle voulait essayer 😆.
Merry Christmas ! For the occasion we sleep late until 9:30. Time when we start our Christmas brunch under a radiant sun. And to celebrate, we’re making pancakes today! Unfortunately not with my usual recipe but with a pre-made mix in which you just have to add water. Either way, that does the trick.
We only have one frying pan with us so we each take turns cooking a pancake for a good 2 hours. We also share other snacks with the other people present. We’re really having a great time.
But unfortunately, we have to set off at some point to reach the next camp. So we tidy up all our mess and we’re on the water at around 12:30. The day remains beautiful and we let ourselves float slowly. After a while we have to start rowing because a headwind is rising which significantly slows our progress. That doesn’t stop us from rafting from time to time with Kat, Max, Jamie and Roxann.
We finally reach Hiponga Camp around 5:30 p.m. This is our last camp before returning to civilization 🙁. The arrival at the camp itself must be earned because a nice little steep slope goes up from the mooring pontoon and we have to carry all the barrels…
An hour later, once the tent is set up, we begin to prepare our Christmas dinner. We try once again a variant of the chickpea curry with more vegetables and without the spinach that we had to throw away 2 days before because they were crushed during the trip 😅. Gijs is also preparing a pot of mulled wine for us. The smell is very attractive but the taste is a bit off and very bitter because there is no sugar. As the saying says: “fortune favours the bold” and as such I infuse one of Max’s marshmallows in the wine and surprisingly it fixes the wine a little bit ! It removes some of the bitterness but we still can’t finish the pot… It was stil a pretty good try !
For dessert, we share some snacks and chocolates with the group. By the qay, Kat made us taste a local sweet: Pavlova flavored sweets. And it’s… Really not very good haha. Even Kat admits it, she’s not a fan but she wanted to try 😆.
