Free Camping @305km – Whananaki Holiday Park : 23.2km
Réveil 6:30 comme d’hab mais avec une bonne tête dans le cul ce matin. Mon matelas est resté plutôt bien gonflé. Le Tenacious Tape de décolle toujours mais la réparation avec le kit semble bien maintenir le tout en place. Mais j’ai quand même eu qu’un sommeil léger car mon cerveau me faisait croire pendant toute la nuit que le matelas se dégonflait…
Petit déjeuner rapide avant de plier la tente un peu mouillée de rosée. Le temps est très couvert. À notre altitude (pas très élevée mais quand même) on dirait qu’on a la tête dans les nuages. On a eviron 25km de marche de prévu aujourd’hui avec la majorité sur de la route. Pour changer…
7:55 départ du camp avec Sean et Aaron alors que Neele et Gijs ont déjà filé devant. Marie, elle, prend son temps. On ne la retrouvera que cet après midi.
9:45 petite pause au bord de la route vers l’endroit où la route de gravier se change en route goudronnée. La on croise un groupe d’une dizaine de motards qui se font des voyages entre potes chaque année à travers la NZ. On se dit que c’est quand même une belle invention la moto et que ce serait vachement moins crevant de voyager avec ça :p
Vers 10:15 on s’y remet. C’est parti pour 15km de route…
On en a gentiment assez de ces kilomètres de route sans grands intérêts. Ça pète les pieds et les articulations de marcher longtemps sur ces surfaces si dures. C’est un des grands désavantages de l’île du nord, surtout avec toutes ces fermetures de forêts à cause du Kauri Dieback… On se réjouit de passer au sud d’Auckland pour voir, entre autre, mount Doom, Whanganui et Wellington. Mais surtout : vivement l’île du sud !
On arrive déjà vers 13:15 au holiday park! Neele et Sean nous ont dégoté une cabine pour pas cher. On dort un peu au milieu de mobilier en désordre car la cabine est en partielle rénovation (d’où le prix bas). Mais au moins on peut passer la nuit à l’abri et au sec car il est annoncé un orage cette nuit et demain encore plus violent que celui d’il y a deux jours.
En attendant, on profite du temps clément pour lancer des lessives et prendre une bonne douche chaude avant d’aller chercher un peu de nourriture au petit shop à l’entrée du park. On y trouve les habituelles fish’n’chips et d’autres trucs délicieusement pas très sains mais pas très chers.
On se regarde ensuite 2 épisodes de la saison 7 de Taskmaster (une des meilleures, vivement recommandée) avant de lancer vers 20:00 le seigneur des anneaux 2 en fond sonore car c’est un des seuls truc qu’on a de déjà téléchargé sur notre iPad et le Wi-Fi est mauvais de là où on est.
Pendant ce temps la tempête à commencé et elle rage à l’extérieur. Quelle chance d’être à l’abri !
Wake up at 6:30 as usual but with our heads up our arses this morning. My mattress stayed quite well inflated. The Tenacious Tape is still peeling off but the repair with the kit seems to hold everything in place. But I still had only a light sleep because my brain made me believe all night long that the mattress was deflating…
Quick breakfast before folding the tent a little wet with dew. The weather is very overcast. At our altitude (not very high but still) it looks like we have our heads in the clouds. We have about 25km of walking planned today with the majority of it on the road. For a change…
7:55 departure from the camp with Sean and Aaron while Neele and Gijs have already ran ahead. Marie is taking her time. We won’t see her again until later this afternoon.
9:45 short break on the side of the road towards where the gravel road changes into a tarmac road. There, we meet a group of about ten bikers who travel together every year through NZ. We tell ourselves that motorcycles are great inventions and that it would be so much less exhausting to travel with them :p
Around 10:15 we get back to it. Let’s go for 15km of road…
We’re quite fed up with these kilometers of road without great interest. It hurts the feet and the joints to walk for a long time on such hard surfaces. This is one of the great disadvantages of the North Island, especially with all these forest closures because of the Kauri Dieback… We are eager to go south of Auckland to see, among other things, Mount Doom, Whanganui and wellingtons. But above all: we can’t wait for the South Island!
We already arrive around 1:15 p.m. at the holiday park! Neele and Sean got us a cheap cabin. We sleep a little in the middle of messy furniture because the cabin is partially being renovated (hence the low price). But at least we can spend the night sheltered and dry because a storm is announced for tonight and tomorrow and which should be even stronger than the one two days ago.
In the meantime, we’re taking advantage of the mild weather to start washing clothes and take a good hot shower before going to get some food at the little shop at the entrance to the park. There are the usual fish’n’chips and other deliciously not very healthy but not very expensive stuff.
We then watch 2 episodes of season 7 of Taskmaster (one of the best, highly recommended) before launching at around 8:00 p.m. the lord of the rings 2 in the background because it’s one of the only things we’ve already downloaded on our iPad and the Wi-Fi is bad where we are.
Meanwhile the storm has started and it rages outside. How lucky we are to be safe and dry !
