Paihia – Orongo Bay Holiday Park : 3.8km

9:30 départ de la Bay of Island Lodge. Kat nous a quitté un peu plus tôt car elle veut finalement faire 26km aujourd’hui pour ne pas trainer plus que ça. On passe voir la compagnie pour les kayaks pour savoir si on peut pas quand même faire aujourd’hui.
Et nope, pas possible. Il y a trop de vent (25knt) qui viendrait en plus de face et qui forcira ce soir jusqu’à 35knts. Ça compliquerait encore plus un trajet assez physique déjà par beau temps.

Du coup, on enchaine vers 10:00 avec un full resupply pour les 5 prochains jours. Ça nous avait pas manqué d’avoir autant de poids sur notre dos… Mais étrangement (enfin, heureusement) on ne sent plus trop le poids de manière générale. Nos corps s’y sont habitués 🙂

Étant donné que le kayak tombe à l’eau (hehe), on prend le ferry vers 10:50 pour Russell de l’autre côté de la baie pour suivre l’alternative pédestre du TA.

A peine arrivés vers 11:15 on va se boire des cafés et thés bien mérité ? Au café même il y a de la nourriture tellement alléchante qu’on craque tous pour une pièce. On se permet une si longue pause car aujourd’hui on ne fera que 6km jusqu’à notre prochain logement.

13:30 on arrive au holiday park… Apparemment il est possible de voir des kiwis ici ! Ou en tout cas de les entendre la nuit. On se partage une cabine à 6 car il va pleuvoir cette nuit et c’était à peine plus cher qu’une place pour la tente.
On se pose ensuite un moment et on en profite pour rédiger un peu notre journal de bord. Un peu après, alors que Mag’ est partie faire un tour, je m’effondre dans une sieste ^^

Vers 15:00 on va vers une station essence pas loin pour se chercher des glaces et profiter des dernières heures sans pluie. Puis on se pose sur une table de picnic pour jouer au Qwixxx. Pendant notre partie une femme passe vers nous pour taper la causette. Elle a de nombreux problèmes neurologiques qui touchent ses jambes et elle était en chaise roulante il y a encore 3-4 mois. Depuis, elle a décidé de parcourir le plus possible du TA. Vraiment impressionnant !! Elle se fait des jours de 10-12km et doit prendre régulièrement des zeros lorsque ses jambes n’en peuvent plus.

Peu de temps après, un peu de pluie commence à tomber et nous rentrons tous dans notre cabine… Sauf Neele qui se fait tenir la jambe par cette même femme. Après un long moment, je sors aux toilettes et la vois toujours en train de discuter alors qu’elle semble crever de froid (elle est en short). J’essaie de la sauver de la situation en interrompant la conversation pour lui demander si elle n’a pas froid et si elle ne voudrait pas rentrer se changer. Heureusement ça fonctionne et la conversation s’arrête enfin ^^

Vers 19:00 on va se chercher à manger à un foodtruck de bouffe thaï à l’entrée du holiday park que tout le monde semble recommander. La réceptionniste du holiday park nous dit même que les habitants de Russell font souvent le déplacement pour profiter de ce foodtruck. Et après y avoir goûté, on comprend pourquoi. C’était absolument délicieux ! Le pad thai et curry du jour sont un régal. Quel dommage qu’il pourra en prendre qu’une fois 😦 C’est aussi à peu près à cette heure-là que la pluie commence vraiment à tomber…

On joue au Qwixx jusqu’à la tombée de la nuit, après quoi on ressort pour tenter de voir des kiwis dans le coin du holiday park réputé pour ça. La balade à la frontale est sympa mais sans succès. Il n’y a pas trop de d’endroits où s’arrêter, surtout quand il pleut alors on ne prend pas trop le temps de rester immobiles et silencieux.

9:30 am departure from the Bay of Island Lodge. Kat left us a bit earlier because she wants to hike 26km today and does not care to try for the kayak.

So we go see the company for the kayaks to find out if we can still go today. And nope, not possible. There is too much wind (25knt) which would come from the front and which will increase to 35knt tonight. It would complicate even more what would be an already fairly physical trip in good weather.

Thus, at 10:00 we go for a full resupply for the next 5 days. We didn’t miss having so much weight on our backs… But strangely (well, fortunately) we don’t feel the weight too much in general anymore. Our bodies got used to it 🙂

Since the kayak falls through, we take the ferry at around 10:50 for Russell on the other side of the bay to follow the pedestrian alternative of the TA.

Barely arrived around 11:15 am we go for some well-deserved coffees and teas? In the cafe itself there is food so tempting that we all go for a piece. We allow ourselves such a long break because today we will only do 6km to our next accommodation.

13:30 we arrive at the holiday park… Apparently it is possible to see kiwis here! Or at least to hear them at night. We share a cabin with 6 because it will rain tonight and it was barely more expensive than a place for the tent.
We then sit down for a while and take the opportunity to write our blog for a bit. A little later, when Mag’ went for a walk, I collapsed in a nap ^^

Around 3:00 p.m. we go to a nearby gas station to get some ice cream and enjoy the last hours without rain. Then we sit on a picnic table to play Qwixxx. During our game a woman walks over to us to have a chat. She has many neurological problems affecting her legs and she was in a wheelchair until 3-4 months ago. Since then, she has decided to travel as much of the TA as possible. Really amazing !! She makes days of 10-12km and must regularly take zeros when her legs can’t take it anymore.

Shortly after, a little rain starts to fall and we all go back to our cabin… Except Neele who’s kept out by the woman. After a long time, I go out to the bathroom and see her still talking while she seems to be freezing (she’s in shorts). I try to save her from the situation by interrupting the conversation to ask her if she is not cold and if she would like to go inside to change. Fortunately it works and the conversation finally stops ^^

Around 7:00 p.m. we go get something to eat at a Thai food truck at the entrance to the holiday park that everyone seems to recommend. The receptionist of the holiday park even tells us that the inhabitants of Russell often come to take advantage of this foodtruck. And after having tasted it, we understand why. It was absolutely delicious! The pad thai and curry of the day are a treat. What a pity that he can only take it once 😦 It’s also around this time that the rain really starts to pour…

We play Qwixx until nightfall, after which we go out to try to see kiwis in the corner of the holiday park famous for it. The walk with the headlamps is nice but without success. There aren’t too many places to stop, especially when it’s raining so you don’t take too much time to stay still and quiet.
